I know I haven’t written about work since Wednesday but some days there is not much to report back on. Instead I shall write about my trip back from San Pedro.
Last Sunday it rained heavily, so heavily that most of us were worried about catching the water taxi back. At 2.30 the braver people hopped on to the little boat and sailed off amidst the storm and rough waves. The boat crew gave them tarpaulin to shield them from the rain and the all covered their heads; they looked like a bunch of stowaways.
I stayed behind with another female volunteer because there were two members of our group who had not turned up. We decided to head for a bar next to the pier and wait for the 3.30 boat.
As soon as we walked in a very drunk American approached us and asked if the two of us were a couple. He then sat on our table and talked non-stop. He said he used to be an accountant and now he is a bum. He told us that we were welcome to stay at his place but it is not really his place. I knew it was time to leave when he said that he is a schizophrenic and that he has seen satan.
By 3.30 the rain had stopped but the other two volunteers hadn’t turned up. We had no choice but to catch the boat as it was the last one off the caye. The journey was good and we rescued some stranded fishermen who were only able to pay in shell fish.
We caught the 6 o’clock bus out of Belize City to Belmopan and had to stand most of the way. Eventually we got a seat and about two minutes after my leg started to itch. I noticed the other volunteer was also itching. For the duration of the journey the itching got worse and we concluded that there must have been fleas on the bus!
It was dark by the time we got to Belmopan so we decided to catch a taxi; we shared it with a young American couple and their two babies. The volunteer was dropped off first and then the Americans. As he reversed back onto the road to take me home he hit a car! Nothing serious but as the two men discussed the damage I took out my phone and pressed 911 (just incase). The driver managed to get lost (in Belmopan!) He also told me he drove trucks for a living (which makes me wonder if he was a real taxi driver).
The minute I got home I showered and the itching stopped. Apparently the other two volunteers had caught a plane back to Belize City!
