When I wrote this post the focus was on the response I got from other people with locks (mainly black men), this posting is a follow up but with a difference.
I was making my way to the market for lunch and coming towards me was a white couple, holding hands and looking happy. As they got closer, the man looked up, smiled and did the whole ‘right fist over heart’ salute.
This man did not have locks, he did not even have long hair and I was not sure how to respond. I knew it could not be the whole ‘so excited to see a black person’ type greeting nor was it a patronising ‘ I am down with your people and your struggle’ greeting. I have experienced both and I can spot them a mile away. It was a genuine, ‘pleased- to- see -you- my sister’ kinda greeting and for once in my life I was speechless. I just nodded and walked off laughing to myself.
One of the volunteers here has this quote that she likes to use and I think that is the only way I can sum up his greeting to him I was ‘ a sister from a different mister’ and I wish I had hailed him right back with my ‘brother from another mother’ kinda greeting.
