Our office is now officially open. This is what the media had to say about the event.
BELMOPAN – The National Council on Ageing today opened its Secretariat and Office in Belmopan City.
The Office, situated at 35 Mussel Creek Street, will be instrumental in continuing to ensure that older persons in the community get involved in and contribute to society, thus creating for themselves and the community at large, an environment of independence, dignity and integrity.
Main Speaker at the event, Prime Minister Hon. Said Musa, pointed out that a large portion of the problems in the world today stem from not obeying the Biblical commandment, Honour your Father and Your Mother.
He thus encouraged the younger generation to be more mindful of the work and the contribution by older persons around them and respect, love and care for the elderly. He reminded the ‘younger persons’ that, if they are lucky, one day soon they will also become older persons and will want to also be loved, respected and cared for.
Prime Minister Musa concluded, “I am here to indicate the support of the Government of Belize for the National Plan of Action for Older Persons
For her part, Hon. Silvia Flores, Minister of Human Development, noted she was extremely pleased to be participating in this ceremony, which “marks yet another major step towards the effective implementation of the National Policy for Older Persons, which was approved just over two years ago.
Minister Flores went on to state, “I believe that it is crucial that we develop within our society a greater understanding of ageing and the significance of caring, not only for the elderly, but also for each other. I am convinced that if we care for each other and show greater love and consideration this will translate into us caring more about our older members, especially when they reach an age where they need the greatest attention.
His Excellency the Governor General, Sir Colville Young and the British High Commissioner were among distinguished personalities present at this morning ceremonies.
