The Belize section is dedicated to my time as an overseas volunter in Belize.
This was the main reason why I set up this website. I have decided to keep these pages to serve as a reminder of what was a life changing experience.

This particular page gives an insight into the Pre-Belize segment of my volunteer journey. Navigate through the rest of these pages listed in the sidebar to find out more.

 BACKGROUND

The Placement was arranged by Challenges World Wide. Since I wanted a placement that utilised my legal background, they recommended Belize. As a former British colony, the Belize legal system is based on the English legal system.

THE PROCESS

I have found it helps to divide the process into four stages

Application - CWW had an online application form which I filled in and attached my CV

Interview - Once my CV had been vetted an interview date was set. The main purpose of this interview is to find out if an applicant is ready for life as a volunteer. My understanding of this stage was that, academic qualifications, while necessary, were only of value if an applicant appeared to have the required “life skills” such as previous voluntary work experience, travel especially within the developing world.

Fundraising - I had to pay to volunteer. The cost of volunteering for three months with Challenges Worldwide was about £3,000 distrubted in the following way

Placement Fee: £1,650 payable to CWW and covered food and accommodation

Personal Expenses: This included all travel, vaccinations, and spending money

Training Weekend - All CWW volunteers must attend a training weekend prior to departure. The details of my weekend can be found here: The Training Weekend.
