Lynden David Hall

Lynden David Hall

UK soul singer Lynden David Hall, passed away yesterday (February 14th 2006) and his death has struck me on so many levels.

Firstly the cause of his death has brought to the fore an issue that Guess has discussed (more than once I think?)Black and Minority Ethnic Group donors. Prior to his death, Lynden David Hall battled for two years with Hodgkins Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer. Like many other forms of cancer, the survival rate relies on (amongst other things) bone marrow transplants. As Guess pointed out in her post, there is a shortage of black and minority ethnic group donors in the UK. Lynden David Hall was aware of this and launched Lynden’s Wish, a fundraising event held at the Jazz Cafe last November. Losing Lynden further highlights how important it is for us as black people to register as donors.

Secondly I am saddened at the low level of publicity surrounding his passing. The BBC and Radio 1 Xtra (they have a wonderful tribute section) both have the story on their sites but that appears to be it. Tonight, the music world gathered in London for what is the biggest musical award show in the UK The Brits. One would expect that on a night like this, focus would not just be limited to the winners but also to those artists who have influenced today’s winners. After all Lynden was a 1999 Brit Nominee and as Lemar thanked tonight’s audience for his Best Urban Act Brit award one can not help see the similarity in style between the two singers. And who can forget Lyndens cameo as a wedding singer in Love Actually? Surely his soulful rendition of the Beatle song All you need is love? is reason enough for the UK media to realise the gap in UK music that now exists. Lynden was a talented individual who wrote all his songs played a host of instruments and had a voice that many likened to DAngelo and I feel that there should be more in the news.

Thirdly, and this is perhaps the most painful part of all this, a family is mourning the loss of a son and a brother. I went to school with Lynden’s younger brother and have been friends with him ever since. I can only imagine what he and his family are going through at this time and I pray that God will guide them through this.

This blog article is my little tribute to a great man who shall be missed by music lovers all around the world. A man who at 31 years old has gone too soon but shall be remembered for achieving a great deal in such a short time.

Please pass our condolences to CJ and his family and tell them we are praying for them.

  2. Kui, Thank You for this. I heard it on the Radio this morning, and the way they said it was a ‘by the way’ and though I knew that LDH has been sick, I didnt know it till today that he had passed away, and like you I felt a big ‘hit’ and was going to write something about it today, but you have done it wonderfully.

I still maintain that we black people should focus more on issues that only ‘WE’ can do something about - and bone marrow/blood/organ (although I am not on the register of the latter, yet) should be at the forefront.

I feel sad for his family/friends and like Mshairi said pass my condolences to the family. We may not personally have known him but his passing has hit us nonetheless.

Once again Kui Thank you for this tribute.

  3. A lovely tribute and a timely reminder for us to register as donors of all sorts.

May Lynden rest in peace and may God comfort his family

  5. I had the pleasure of seeing Lynden live a couple of times - last at the jazzcafe where despite his illness he put on the most amazing show. We have lost a brilliant talented brother - albeit underrated.
    Rest in Peace Lynden

P.S. We also lost another talented brother late last week to lupus. J Dilla - A different genre altogether (hip hop) brilliant none the less.

  6. I agree with the leading article on this. It left me cold the way on a musical night such as the brits, the industry failed to recognise someone who paved the way for the Lemar’s, and Craig David’s.
I loved Lynden, his music touched me in a quiet unassuming way, but it was very powerful nonetheless. I am so proud the way he used his last days to raise awareness for a disease that even though we know about, affects the people in our communities in a much more devastating way. Lynden, your music will live on, and be the ‘medecine for our pain’ now that your gone. My thoughts and prayers are with his family right now, may God give them the comfort to bear the loss. A genius has gone from our midst, and i’m not sure we know it.

  7. I knew LDH was ill after reading about Lynden’s Wish at the Jazz Cafe, but was so sad to hear of his death.

I was shocked that this had not been reported more as LDH was one of our greatest talents.

I send my sympathy to his family

  8. Anthony Nolan Trust are pretty effective in raising bone marrow donor awareness. Do you know whether the idea of getting the issue raised at the Brits was suggested to them?

Anthony Nolan Trust (http://www.anthonynolan.org.uk/) started with an individual, Anthony himself, and his mum Shirley’s campaigning to make the public aware of the need for bone marrow donation. It was my admiration for Shirley’s determined campaigning that led me to register as a bone marrow donor.

African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT) recruit volunteer donors from African, African-Caribbean and mixed parentage/descent for the Anthony Nolan Trust’s Register.

It might be worth you contacting them to suggest an approach to the Brits organisers - perhaps using Anthony Nolan Trust’s organisational influence - for next year’s event.

  14. The sweetest voice, the subtly intelligent lyrics…how many times have I played Victor…

His talent touched many (I am a 56 year old white male…) Gone but not forgotten.

My heart goes out to his family.

When I’m Dead and Gone is playing…it follows Victor on the CD…what a lovely man.

    Peace, David

  16. A truly sad piece of news. I also knew nothing of Lynden’s illness & what a shock to hear of his sad passing away. A great memory I’ll always treasure is being with my boyfriend at Notting Hill Carnival some years ago, and seeing a group of people cheering and waving. Looking up at the window of a pub, and there was Lynden David Hall smiling and waving… We spent the rest of the day really on a high at having seen one of our favourite singers, a true & humble star. My thoughts and prayers to Lynden’s family. Rest peacefully Lynden- may your beautiful, velvet tones ring through my ears and in heaven always.

  17. I felt I had to write something in relation to the passing of this talented and beautiful person who put a smile on my face on many occasions.

I only found out about this terribly sad news yesterday and it has been on my mind ever since. I agree with previous comments regarding the total lack of awareness of this sad occasion and am disappointed that there was no mention of this at the Brit Awards.

I remember with great affection going to watch him at the Manchester Academy in 1999 with hundred’s of women swooning over this delectable man who was melting our hearts with his chocolaty tones….

I feel deep sadness for his family and would like to pass on my condolences. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.

  18. Man this is a great loss. I was never too much of a UK R&B fan back then and when I heard this brother, man I had to get his first album. Not only did I do that but also got all of his singles and anything he featured in. I now live in the US and I brag about him so much over here and I was only told about his death today. My sympathy goes to his Family. I cant imagine loosing a son and brother, especially someone so talented. Uk lost an icon thats all I can say and if they don’t want to really embrace that, it is shown by the music industry over there. If someone like that was to die over here in the US, there will be a hell of a tribute to him. He was special.

  19. I am shocked and saddened to hear of lyndens death he was a truly great musician who’s music had such a big influence on my life, I am also saddened at the lack of publicity on his passing and hope that some sort of tribute will be paid to a man that deserves so much more from the music world and his fans. Many condolences to lyndens family, rest in peace your music will always be in our hearts!

  20. Like the rest of you I have been deeply moved by the death of Lynden. His music and lyrics touched me to the core. It was medicine for my “pain”. He wrote from the heart and expressed openly feelings and emotions that all too many of us deny and suppress. His talent far surpassed his musical and arrangement abilities. His pain healed others. He was truly an earth angel. Now his pain is ended and I hope he is flying free, finding out the answers to his questions, “I wonder do angels cry…”. Lynden, your life was short but you have touched more hearts than many of us could in 10 lifetimes! Healing and love to Lyndens family and friends xxx

  22. R.I.P Lynden David Hall, I feel bad to have discovered him posthumously. Will search out record stores for his music.

True, our community world wide needs to get it straight that if we don’t change our perceptions on being donors then how do we expect to find cures for illnesses that affect us in disappropriate numbers? How then can we save ourselves if we don’t have enough, regular matching “donations”
    Thanks for sharing.

    PS:How have you been Kui?:)!

  35. The Hall family should feel immensly proud of the footprint left by David on the walk of life. A cruel irony being valentines day however his talent is immortalised in his catalogue. Here’s a final thought: You become a donor not because you need to, but because somebody, somewhere - their life depends on it.

  37. To have such love for someone I didn’t know, I didn’t think was possible until the day Lynden passed away. Lynden reached me on so many levels, not just musically, but helping me through a sad time when my brother passed away in 1999, the album medicine 4 my pain meant a lot to me esp.Do Angels Cry.

I cried the day Lynden left us, purely for the fact that I would never again experience the intimate gigs he played, the whole crowd singing acopella (Sexy Cinderalla at Southport 2000!), and never hear his soulful voice singing a song I didn’t know. I have now vowed to share my knowledge of this truly unfulfilled and ‘unsung’ singer with every single person I know to keep his spirit gmoving on.

Why so soon? so sad. My heartfelt feelings go out to all that knew him personally, I can only imagine with sadness how they must feel having lost such a light in their lives.

Always in my heart Lynden, Mish

  47. It’s funny how you can be so affected by someone’s death without having personally known them or even met them. I have been listening to his music every day and even fall asleep to it.

It would have been great to get another album from him. What he achieved is more than some can claim. It’s a pity he was taken so soon from his family and friends.

For those who want to highlight the plight of people in the same predicament of needing bone marrow, please contact Anthony Nolan for details. I think LDH would appreciate that, aside from your never forgetting his music. *sad smile*

RIP and my prayers and thoughts with the family, always.

He was a truly beautiful person with so much to give and although some may not think he was important enough as we can see form this websit there are many who think otherwise. I am ashamed to admit that I did not know that he was dead until a friend told me as there was NO mention of it in the media unless you look very hard. 54. This kills me on the inside to realize that Lynden is gone. It still hasn’t sunk in yet. We have lost one of the most prolific sons of the most soulful genre’s. I have been waiting for his upcoming album and now this. I remember early last year going through the net trying to find out where Lynden’s disappeared to, with no avail. This is one guy that he hasn’t disappointed me with his first two offerings. I could only know that the next album is a must for my collection. Since I first heard him, I wouldn’t think twice buying his releases. No need to even pre-listen, coz I knew that he was excellent in his art. FAREWELL MY BROTHA FROM ANOTHER MOTHER!!! Will miss you so BADLY!!! :(

  55. Firstly i am deeply saddened at the passing of one of britains true musical talents and can not thank Lynden enough for the wonderful music that he gave us. Having been a long term admirer of Lynden and knowing about his illness i feel in some way let down by the media in this country that i have only found out 10 minutes ago that he has gone forever.

Rest in peace Mr Handsome and through your music you will live on and on. All my love to your family and friends.

I thought to myself that he must be an upcoming artist and he was gonna be BIG because he had such a good voice. Suddenly at the bottom of the screen it said that he had died just a few days before of Hodgkins Lymphoma. I just felt so sad because he had such a talent. He had a voice that just made me wanna stay and hear more. I am so surprised he did not receive more recognition because he was amazing!

    xXx….REST IN PEACE….xXx

In my books a mighty legend who will never be forgotten.

  63. I am deeply deeply saddened by Lynden’s death. I wasn’t even aware he was ill! I went to the BRIT school with Lynden and was a good friend of his at the time. We had a great time at college and from the first day I met him I knew that he was going to be a BIG star! Such talent.. and what a voice and such a talented song writer..so liked by all his fellow students and such a kind, considerate person. This is a tragedy and Lynden is going to be missed by all.
My prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends at this time..
May you rest in peace Lynden…… Lots of love, Alison Daisy.. xxx

  64. We also did not hear anything until at least a week after LDH’s death, and in fact I heard while I was on holiday in the Carribean by a family member so we were in deep shock and could not believe the lack of publicity bearing in mind I was in the UK at the time of his death. It just seems such a shame that a legend such as LDH was not recognised or being given a tribute at the BRITS for his legendary work. It does make you put a lot into perspective of what the media will and will not recognise. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

    Rest In Peace.

  65. When i heard the news i was saddened but at the same time confused, there needs to be more coverage on this story if only to cause awareness..
The man who opened my heart to Urban music, always had a young dream of LDH singing at MY wedding-now the dream has gone.
Inward but always thoughtful-whos voice will live on
    Prayers for his family..

  68. Lynden, knowing you was a privilege & a blessing and I will always cherish the precious memories I have. You were fine musician, a great songwriter, wonderful singer and to those who knew you an amazing man. My smile will always be a little sadder and my steps a little heavier now you are no longer here (in body) but seeing so much love expressed by so many, fills my heart. You touched so many people in so many ways with your music- your legacy will live on.
See you on The Other Side LD.

What a great loss to the music industry. He was a truly musical genius of my time. My sympathies to his family. I will always treasure my cd collection of him. LDH REST IN PEACE. 72. I still can’t quite grasp it, even as i’m writing this it doesn’t seem real. The passing of Lynden further empathises the truly unfair and cruel sense of humour of fate.
Lynden was so full of life and vigour; he could sway a crowd with just a verse when he was performing. I have seen him live twice and on both occasions he proved he had the talent to do great things. His effortless approach of winning the crowd over by gently caressing the microphone with his voice was a natural talent, a talent that could never be taught.
I can’t believe I’ll never have the chance to witness that again, a truly tragic loss and my deepest condolences goes out to his friends and family. He will be sorely missed.

Rest in Peace Lynden, rest in peace

  73. What a loss! I am so shocked. I haven’t heard of this. Your right, the media should have paid more attention to this.

I love his music needless to say and have replayed ‘Sexy Cinderella’ in my mind plenty-a-times.

I remember seeing Lynden On the Carnival a few years back. Great guy Lynden. I send my condolences to his family, friends and fans.

Take care and Rest in Peace Lynden.

  74. I have just discovered this page you have dedicated to Lynden David Hall. I have been a fan since Medicine For My Pain. I took part in the 1xtra tribute and I felt honoured and privelidged to do that. He was a truly amazing Producer, Songwriter, Soulful Singer and Musician. He is often in my thoughts and I will continue to play his 3 amazing cd’s on and on and be moved by him… This World has lost a beautiful person. He was the most under rated UK Soul Artist Ever……. Peace.

  75. I saw a tribute to him in the MusicWeek dated 25.02.06……..I was totally introduced to him on your blog…..I will go out and buy some of his music and encourage my family and friends to become donors.

  76. I totally agree! I was totally devastated to hear the news of his passing and angered that it did not merit a mention on the news or anywhere in the media….

His debut album “Medicine 4 My Pain” is a classic and as such will be played and loved for years to come. Through his music he will be remembered…. R.I.P.

  77. I only heard of LDH death today through a friend, though I am not from the Uk, hearing about his death was a blow and I guees I speak for all his South African fans when I say he will surely be missed, as we were still expecting more from this talented singer. He has touched my life and his songs will always inspire me. RIP

  78. I am a HUGE LDH fan from the States. I feel like the world has lost one great artist. I am in the military, and the first song that I heard by LDH was “Do I Qualify” when I was stationed in Germanyin 2005. I instantly fell in love with his style of music. Since then I have aquired all of his albulms, and I listen to his music everyday of the week! I wish he would have had the opportunity to bring his music to the States, because I fell that his music is better than half of the stuff that american radio stations play today. I was and I am still his biggest fan here in the states, and I will continue to play his music. RIP Lynden David Hall

  79. I too am a big fan of Lynden. I’ve followed his career from 1998/99 and just loved the unbelievably good album track of the same name ‘Medicine 4 My Pain’. With his soulful voice coupled with his song writing ability, he was destined for even greater things before he his life was sadly cut short. I can remember seeing Lynden as the support act to the Isley Brothers at the Bournemouth Pavilion. In truth, I went to see him but the two acts on the same stage were just amazing. He acoustic session that night with a fellow musician from the ‘projects’ was pure Lynden. I also went backstage to meet him before the gig and was struck by his humility and shyness. On Nov 15 2005, I attended’Lynden’s Wish’ tribute evening at the Jazz Cafe, Camden and was blown away by the warmth of the crowd and the number of top acts on show. Beverley Knight and Andrew Roachford stole the show for me and Roachford’s live version of ‘Heaven Is’ was a powerful and fitting tribute to Lynden. I learnt of his death while on holiday in Australia and immediately tuned into BBC Fivelive online for a recording of Trevor Nelson’s obituary. Thank-you Trevor for your support of Lynden from the start and for giving him the opportunity to blossom into a UK soul legend in his all but too brief lifetime. RIP Lynden.

  80. I only heard about Lynden’s death a few days ago from a friend. I heard nothing about it on the radio. I can’t believe it. I have been listening to his music for years and years and can’t believe how sad this is. He was such a beautiful man with a beautiful voice. Medicine 4 my pain will always be one the most beautiful and moving albums I have ever heard. No other artist has touched me the way Lynden’s songs did. RIP Lynden.

  82. What a tragedy. Lynded David Hall was such an extraordinary talent. No coincidence he passed on Valentine’s Day; he made the kind of music that made people fall more in love with living. His voiced will be missed, but I’m sure he’s up there in heaven leading the angels in his lovely rendition of “All You Need Is Love”…rest in peace, Lynden, your beautiful contributions will not be forgotten.

  83. Two months on and I’m still deeply affected. Like many others, his music got me through some hard times. My favourite memory was seeing him at The Borderline in 2001 with a boyfriend and how talented, charming, witty and easy-going he was. If only we knew how soon he would be taken from us we could have attended more gigs and told him how much he meant to us. I can’t believe I’m so troubled by someone I never knew. Listening to him sing now makes me want to cry.

  84. I too was shocked and saddened by the sudden news of Lynden’s death. Once again the lack of acknowledgement from the British media did not suprise me. It did upset me, however, to know that tributes weren’t made for this man’s fantastic contribution to British Soul music. Lynden was truly a blessing to the industry and his music will live on in the hearts of all those people who had the pleasure of listening to his distinctive sound and style. I am so sorry that I didn’t know of his plight, maybe if we had, more could have been done. They say “The Good Die Young”…. what more can I say. My blessings go out to his family and friends. Lyden RIP and thankyou for your wonderful talent.

  85. What an amazing man. to his family I cant begin to imagine what the last 2 years must have been like for you & how the future will be without him I hope you can find comfort from knowing how much he was loved & how much we will miss him too. 86. I only heard yesterday of Lynden’s death and although I only just recently started to listen to his music I feel shocked to know he no longer is with us. I can say that I fell in love with the warmtn of his voice and lyrics as I’m sure most people have. All my heart goes to his family. I recently lost my partner and the sound of lynden’s voice warmed my heart and I really loved his style. Rest in peace Lynden

  89. I discovered Lynden’s music some years back by chance. As a white guy, I’m seriously into my rock but this man transcended all of the cliques and cliches in popular music; Lynden’s music really moved me, pushing boundaries away and I admired that. Second that, I’ll always admire that. There was something so very different about him, a real genius. His songs were beautiful, and enduring with hooks that just pulled you into listening to him. He played his own instruments too I believe! A true urban poet of our day. I can remember hearing “Wanna Be Another You” and Sexy Cinderella and letting both tracks blow me away. Let’s not even consider the fact that he was from the UK, this guy was solid gold, world-class and a massive talent. It’s really troubled me that he has passed away as his music was great. Man, you rocked…I’m going to miss your music and just enjoy what you’ve left us. Lynden, you were a true legend.
