Comment on Thug Notes: What’s in the subtext? by Rorkus https://beginsathome.com/journal/2013/10/21/thug-notes/comment-page-1/#comment-162673 Mon, 06 Jul 2015 17:22:54 +0000 http://beginsathome.com/?p=678#comment-162673 I love Thug Notes, and am a white 36 year old male from Melbourne, Australia. I’m not exactly what you’re talking about when you use the term ‘coded racism’ because to me Sparky Sweets is a caricature of a thug rather than a typical black American male; I would call a white guy with the same attributes a thug as well, because it has less to do with the colour of his skin and more to do with the costume he wears and the non-standard English he speaks; however, I wouldn’t call a woman a thug even if she shared these attributes, regardless of her skin colour, so I suppose that is also coded sexism!

I was introduced to Thug Notes today by a group of teachers who thought that while classroom inappropriate, it hilarious and great. I felt immediately uncomfortable and asked them to turn it off. You managed to capture exactly what had me feeling so queasy.
