Week 1: Day 1

Mon 27th September 2004 MamaJunkYard

Background

I am working for the National Council on Ageing (NCA) a quasi government body set up by the Ministry of Human Development (MHD). They should be launchung a websit soon and I shall post the link once that happens.

My main role is to draft an Act for Older People though as I am only here for 3 months I am not sure how far I shall get. My placement leader is a British woman, Ms L. Jeffrey who came to Belize 14 years ago as VSO worker and has been here ever since. I mentioned before that she had not been feeling too well so I have been under the care of Mr Evan Dakers. He is a Social Planner and works for the MHD. He really has taken good care of me.

Week 1: Outline

I met with Ms Jeffery and we drew up a short term plan for the week. As it is Senior Citizen’s week a lot of the people I should be meeting are involved with celebrations so I shall spend the this first week reading and familiarising myself with the task ahead and the organisation.

On Tuesday I shall travel with HelpAge Belize and the senior citizen’s to Banana Bank and Wednesday I shall meet with Ms. Jeffery at our new offices which are not too far from the MHD. ( I shall post a picture soon)

HelpAge are having a luncheon on Thursday so I shall attend that and meet some more older people.

Friday I am not sure yet…I may be going to San Pedro with the other volunteers.

Mini- Task
I shall be working on a Rights’ of Older Persons booklet we plan to launch in about two weeks time.

That’s it for now.

#KOT, digital Black joy and Moi’s accidental & actual death

My writing is featured in this month’s The Sociological Review. The theme for the May issue is Digital Social Life. The title of my contribution is Digital Black Lives: Performing (Dis)Respect and Joy Online. I write about #KenyansOnTwitter (#KOT) and I explore how former Kenyan president Moi’s legacy and eventual death in 2020 was discussed […]
