Tales from the City (Part I)

Sun 6th February 2005 MamaJunkYard

Having spent the last 7 years in the countryside I have developed a mild dislike for the City of London. It is not as clean or as a peaceful as the north and it is certainly not as a cheap! Whenever I am in London and I spot a bargain I never let it go. This time round however I learnt a new lesson about all that is cheap…

Last Tuesday while roaming about in Leicester (pron. less- ter) Square with Mich and my sister we decided to go to China Town for an all-you-can-eat buffet. There are 1001 Chinese restaurants in China Town and about 999 of them serve all-you-can-eat buffets of varying standards and prices. We could afford to be picky and we were. We dismissed the first restaurant as too crowded, the second as too expensive and the third as too dimly lit.

In the middle of our decision making we came across a man who had been employed to hand out flyers by one of the Chinese restaurants. Since two out of three of us looked very country he approached us and thrust a flyer in my hand (clearly I looked the most country). Printed on both sides was a list of all the types of buffets this particular restaurant had.

There was a 14 dish buffet for £4.99 per person; a 17 piece buffet for £5.60 per person and a 40 piece buffet for £7.90 person. We immediately ruled out the 14 piece buffet because it didn’t include spare ribs. The 17 piece sounded fine to me but the 40 piece included aromatic crispy duck and dessert!! Mich and my sister love duck but we weren’t sure if the price was right.

We decided to find the restaurant first; inspect the lighting, decor, space etc and then decide from there. As we approached the restaurant window we could not believe our luck. It was perfect. The tablecloths looked clean, the decor was tasteful, the lighting was perfect and there were a few empty tables. The restaurant even had a door man!!

I was yet to be convinced by the price of the 40 piece buffet so we hatched a plan. One person would order the £7.90 buffet, the other two would order the £4.99 buffet and then we would all share the goodies!! With smug grins pasted across our faces we headed towards the entrance and as we approached the door the doorman stopped us and asked….

…..to be continued tomorrow…the hour is late

it’s always amusing to hear tourists ask the way to ‘Le-ces-ter’ undergound station :-)I cannot wait to hear the end of this story. However, you had better stop maligning my beloved city – we may not allow you back 🙂

Kui Says: Is that a threat or a promise ? 🙂
